- What is a documentary - a documentary is a detailed production that talks about a specific subject and centres around it with facts and information. There are a variety topics a documentary can be made about and further can be used for educational, entrainment, factual purposes. It is made to help the subject's audience to understand and know more in depth about their interests. Documentaries can also be preferred to audiences who seem find it easier to understand information visually.
- How do you except a documentary to be constructed? What events often happen in a documentary.? - The main purpose a documentary has is to attract the audience from the start. Which is further why some documentaries seem to structure their productions through storytelling and introduce large factors through small details, which further helps the audience to stay hooked on the production and are further curious throughout without feeling bored. Another event that may occur in a documentary is interviews and theories. The reason why they may play a important factor is because they help the audience form their own opinions and perspectives on the information and keep them hooked throughout.
- Can you think of any documentary surrounding around social issues? - Thank you for the rain is a documentary directed by Julia Dahr and is autobiographic/biographic documentary that showcases Kisliu Musya, a Kenyan farmer. He uses his camera to capture his life, his families and village to show the audience the impact climate change has had on them. The documentary is filmed in a raw way to show the audience the effects climate change has had on Musya and his village, by showing the struggles they had to deal with the intense climate changes. Furthermore, into the documentary we see Musya go out in the city to seek help and spread out the message for the sake of his family and village. This documentary is not only informative but also raises awareness against the impact on climate change and how its effecting the society in a whole.
Describe the different sub-genres of documentary. -
Docudrama/Historical - Historical or Docudrama documentary tends to focus more on moods and perceptive that existed in a certain era. They tend to produce facts objectively without inserting any fictional matters or theories and seems to focus on the facts of the events. Furthermore, they seem to use narrative and literary methods to keep the audience hooked on the events of the narrative.
Biographic/Autobiographic - Autobiographic or Biographic documentaries seems to focus on the life of a non fictional/historical group or people. They seem to be different from other sub genres as their main goal to exposition the life of the group or person throughout the film and give the audience a chance to understand their experience or the event without any other sides or opinion.
Nature/Science - A nature or science documentary is generally about wildlife, non living creatures or plants and they usually centre around their habitats and ecosystem. Their main goal is to give information and educate the audience on a certain scientific/nature and seem to raise questions and sense of wonder to the audience to keep the gripped onto the documentary. Nature documentaries may also tend to capture videos taken of wildlife creatures in their natural habitats to give as much insight to the audience who may not have access to wild or natural environments.
Ethnographic - Ethnographic docu-making produces non-fiction or historical ideals with non-western groups and is also tied with anthropology, which is known as a study of human societies and cultures. It is a form of filmmaking that is formed with academic research with intellectual anthropolaters and has constructed in storytelling and communicative cultural knowledge to keep the audience as informative as possible
Travel - Travel documentaries are filmmaking methods that are used to describe travel and tourist attractions without having a biased recommendation. Their main aim is to keep the audience intrigued on what is the location like and give a detailed insight on how their journey could potentially be like if they were to visit the certain attraction. It is formed in a non-commercial way and tend to introduce local landmarks, cultural attractions, food, leisure and many more factors.
Advocacy/Crime- Advocacy documentary deals with participants who talk about issues affecting them and find a way to get support from the company around. The filmmakers are to make sure to engage in a creative and theoretical process and help in developing different areas they might feel weakened in. Furthermore, it also helps in persuading them to adapt certain set of behaviours. This can also be influential towards the audience and educates them on certain matters.
Crime Documentaries however produce more content that deals with lawbreaking activities. This can include getting insight on what the person/group that committed the crime have done and how it has affected them and people around. This genre of documentaries is often dive deep into stories of real people and tend to give the audience a glimpse into the darker side of humanity.
Rockumentary- Rockumentary documentary is a filmmaking process that talks about rock music and musicians. The main goal for rockumentary is to give the fans of the music/artist an insight on what is was like for them to create the tunes. They tend to also expand more on life performances and behind the scenes of what would be like for them to perform in an audience and how they felt about the music or how they produced the song/lyrics. It helps the audience in connecting more with the music/artist and further is widely known as a form of entrainment and curiosity.
Describe the different modes of documentary.
Poetic Mode documentary produces a certain mood or artistic expression by using Avant-garde methods in the production. This can include using images and songs to induce the audience. Poetic mode documentary seems to exclude themselves from the traditional narrative structure of documentary making which includes voiceovers, narration, direct interactions with the audience as they tend to focus more on the visual appeal and the idea of grasping the inner truth with poetical programs and contemporary expressions.
Performative Mode deals with the filmmakers involvement with their subject by using their personal experience or relation to dive deeper with the subject. It also discover larger truths about history, politics, cultural events or groups/people. This mode of documentary seems to focus more on the emotional impact it has had and helps in creating different meanings for a wide range of people. It furthermore, gives the audience a chance to emphasises with the subject and educate themselves on the matter. The filmmaker holds a big part in this mode as their reactions and thoughts help shape the experience for the audience and impacts on what the matter was like.
Reflective Mode is a process that deals with making the audience aware of the filmmaking progress. It is defined by focusing on the relationship between the filmmaker and the audience and further pushes the audience the raise questions and reflect on what their perceptions are about the truth or what they tend to believe. This mode of documentary is circled around self-awareness and the filmmaker may even look into the cameras and have a direct eye contact with the viewer to make them question or self reflect. This dramatic device heightens the audience involvement in the documentary and builds an environment of curiosity and truthfulness.
Expository Mode are set up on a certain view and tends to create an argumentative or verbal device rather than a poetic or nature one. Expository mode communicates with the viewer directly and a impactful point of view or argument to get the viewer thinking about what they thought about the matter before. As the filmmaker collects such evidence that is strong and well supported it while staying hidden behind the cameras, which creates a 'God-like' experience. Moreover, expository mode relies on logic and the spoken truth as they tend to emphasise the relation between the production being displayed on screen while giving a clear and well supported commentary.
Observational mode is a mode of documentary that tends to record realistic, everyday life without any special editing taken place in the production. It can be known for having a direct camera or fly-on-the-wall filmmaking method as it offers actual stories about real people by avoiding any moralising narratives. This mode of documentary can contain long shots that can express how there was nothing edited or cut-out while production and further have background conversations that may not be part of the documentary to express more of the realism concept. It helps the audience to imagine themselves in the scenario and make it easier for them to understand how the situation might've been like.
Participatory Mode produces a clear relationship between the filmmaker and the interview subject. It is a mode that allows the audience to listen or see what questions were being asked behind the camera so the answer is well understood. At times the filmmaker may even appear in front of the camera without any subjects to create the interview feel in the documentary. The effects of this depends on what content is being produced as it helps shape from minimalistic to intense environments. The filmmaker also tends to then be known as a character in the documentary.
Case Study 1 : Happy a Mental Health Documentary.
1 What is the documentary genre for the short documentary?
Happy seems to be a biographic/autobiographic genre documentary. The reason why I believe that is because the filmmaker himself seems to start the documentary talking about his experience with mental health. This heightens the audience interest and fits the autobiographic genre as the filmmaker seems to tell his personal story and seems to express his voice to show the audience the impact mental health has had on him. Furthermore, the filmmaker also seems to express not only his experience but also other people around him to educate the audience as much as possible and be informative throughout. Overall, this documentary seems to differ from fictional stories and seems to speak on real issues surrounding teenagers/adults which fits the Biographic/Autobiographic genre.
2 What conventions of a documentary does it use and why?
In 'Happy' the filmmaker seems to take his personal experience to tell the audience but also seems to ask other people around him to express their thoughts or experience with mental health. Furthermore, he seems to use the interview method to ask people questions about mental health and lets them express their opinions and how they dealt with it. The reason why this is impactful is because the audience will not only see one experience about mental health but multiple experiences which reflects on how much it has impacted people of all ages. It also helps the audience to know that not everyone deals with specific issues the same and have different coping methods and further gives the audience a chance to self reflect and learn.
3 What documentary modes are used and why? give evidence that includes screenshots to confirm your answer(s).
4 Give one specific area that this student documentary could be improved. It could be narrative structure, camera/sound recording or editing.
Identities
Identity is a socially constructed concept that helps others learn more about a person, groups and organisations. The role of identity is to represent with different images, words, logos to express their message and stand out in society and further express their message through a campaign, organisation or group.
Elements of an identity would deal with factors like gender identity, cultural identity, professional identity, religious identity. These factors help form roles and further determine how we understand the society and changes we experience in the world. The reason why these elements may play a big role because it helps people recognise where they stand and express their voices by using those elements in different ways and face problems together. These elements help in reinforcing the message that is being put out onto different campaigns and organisations and helps in expressing their voices without feeling like they are being pushed down. They also help in educating people who may not be part of these specific elements and be informative so they can all face different opportunities together.
Purpose of an identity plays an important role in entitling individuals or organisations to exercise their responsibilities and rights fairly in the society. The messages the individual or organisation helps in impacting the world socially or economically as it may provide access to some elements that may have not been normalised or were pushed out from higher ups. Which is why the purpose of an identity is to make sure the message is strong and clear to the audience and that they are able to understand it and further stand with it when facing opportunities or problems. They help in shaping the world and compromising ideologies and creating something even better world around us. An example of a strong identity campaign can be Dove's Choose Beautiful campaign which had impacted a lot of women to stand against the stereotypes surrounding beauty standards and how they 'should' look like.
Dove had set out a campaign known as 'Dove Choose Beautiful' where the company had set out two doors to a shopping centre, one labelled 'beautiful' and the other 'Average.' They labelled these entrances in popular cities like London, San Francisco, Shanghai, Sao Paula and Delhi. However many women chose to go through the 'Average' door rather than displaying to the world that the acknowledged their beauty which may have been unsurprising for some women as the beauty standards seemed to set out those ideologies. Which is why Dove began the movement #ChooseBeautiful campaign where they aimed to change the instincts for women to settle for average.
This impacted a lot of women and had socially impacted people and further made them realise that women shouldn't feel like they are not 'enough' to fit the beauty standards and how these stereotypes made them feel anxious in their own skin. As dove quotes 'We can choose beautiful for ourselves, it's not anyone's right but our own.' Which has now changed a lot in the beauty industry and many people recognise dove for their powerful campaign.
The reason why the use of identities in campaigns may be impactful is because it helps shape the campaign in a whole. As they may choose to focus on a specific identity and further signify their message through that identity to reach a larger audience. Whatever identity they may choose it helps in stimulating a larger context and helps in spreading their message more easily to people outside the identity. Which can further help in gaining more power and recognition so the initial message of the campaign is successfully spread to the world and has reached the social and economical goal. If a campaign seems to not have a strong sense of identity it can get a little complicated to spread their message. Furthermore, it can also reach the wrong audience or some people may misunderstand the concept of the campaign which can lead to an unsuccessful end. Which is why having a strong and clear identity helps the campaign to face any problems and further normalise their message and reach different target audiences which can help in creating and shaping the society better.
Experimental Jetset
These were two experimental jetset designs I had made using illustrator. My main goal was to create a dove campaign poster as I had already did my research on it and had a clear idea of what the campaign was about. My main idea was stay minimalistic as experimental jetset designs seem to contain only typography and few pictures. Which is why for my first design I went with more white space around the corner and only added the typography elements in the middle as I wanted the viewer to identity the simplicity of the poster right away and make it easier for them to understand when they look at the text. Furthermore, I wanted to make sure the message of the campaign is clear by having the typography in the middle so that readers don't have to question much on what the campaign might be about.
Some other elements I used was 3D within the typography. I did not use any extra elements to create the shadow effect, instead I used stroke and the use of colours in my typography for both designs. As my aim was to stay simple and clear, adding the typographic 3D element helped me to show more of my creative skills within experimental jetset. Furthermore, I also used colours a lot to express the campaign. I recreated the Dove logo and used the golden colour on texts like ''Beautiful'' in both my designs to make the word stand out more and to help understand the campaign message easier. I also decided to use the gold colour as part of my theme and used them as boarders and text colours on both of my designs to add more graphical elements in the minimalistic poster.
To express more creative elements, I decided to add the strikethrough on the word average. The reason why I did was to show the viewer that they shouldn't choose average as their first option when it comes to expressing themselves and always go for beautiful. This is one of the main aims for the dove campaign which is why I decided to use that aim in a more creative way.
Experimental Jetsets
Experimental jetsets were first introduced in 1997 by an Amsterdam based design trio known as Danny van den Dungen, Erwin Brinkers and Marieke Stolk. Their work had a variety of forms which went from to installations to printed matter that have stood out to the audience as they have a unique thought process and style. They are known for using 'Helvetica' a lot throughout their designs which may be one of the reasons why the stand out the most. As their use of one font throughout their design sets out their style and can become easily recognisable. Another factor that makes them stand out is their use of monochromic colours throughout their designs and having a modern minimalistic theme which helps in conveying the messages more clearly. Their designs have also influenced a lot of the modernist movement which rose during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
This was an experimental jetset made by the trio for Fernando and Humberto campana who worked together in their furniture designers in Sao Paulo since 1989. The trio had made two posters and two invitations for the exhibition that was being held. All of their posters and invitations held a specific theme throughout which was a green and blue font colours. This was one of the two posters they had designed. This poster seems to hold a main text in the middle of the poster which is ''Antibodies'' which is name of the exhibition.
They reason why it stood out to me the most is how they had used the colours green and blue to highlight the texts. The letters are not in a straight line instead are almost trying to fit in within the poster with the use of the big size, which I found unique. Furthermore they seemed to divide the word ''Antibodies'' into the green and blue colours but had the ''I'' in the word different colours. It may have been done to show the viewers that the green letter ''i'' was connected to the word ''ant'' and vise versa for ''bodies.'' This was a interesting element as even if the viewers were to be confused of the placement of the letter and colours they could still understand the heading itself as it still spells ''antibodies.''
The poster also seems to have the informative texts around the corners of and are given a black colour. Here the ''Z pattern theory'' as the viewers would find information on the corners of the poster. They had also chosen to highlight the important informative in a bigger size than the rest of the black texts like ''naim'' and ''bureau europa'' which can indicate more information to the viewers. Overall, I think this poster design was creative and had multiple unique elements they had used with just fonts and shaped it perfectly to the viewers on what the poster was about.

Applying Todorov's Theory - Tangled
Equilibrium - The equilibrium in tangled starts off after the introduction we get to the plot of tangled, where we see Flynn rider play the role of the narrator and explain how Rapunzel was taken away from her parents. After the introduction we see how Rapunzel has grown in the tower and how she seems to grow into different hobbies like painting, baking, reading to pass her time and with her pet chameleon Pascel and seems to be content with those activities and hums happily. The environment pretty and looks magical as we also see Flynn rider roaming around the city as he runs away from the guards after he captures the crown, he seems to enjoy this moment.
Disruption - Flynn Rider meets Rapunzel and the witch discovering Rapunzel's whereabouts. At this point of the movie we see how Mother gothel seems to reject Rapunzel from leaving the tower which leads to Rapunzel rebelling against her ''mother'' as she discovers how Flynn rider ends up in the tower and makes a deal. Then we see how Rapunzel leaves the tower with Flynn which Mother Gothel finds out. After discovering that we see Mother Gothel's evil side show up as she threatens and uses the Stabbington brothers to capture Rapunzel and deceive her.
Recognition - The point of the recognition of the movie happens when we see Rapunzel discover the outside world. While she doesn't know she is the Lost princess yet, we see her stand against Mother Gothel and chases her goal to see the lantern. Furthermore, we also see how she seems to recognise some of her features in the family picture of the King and Queen and their lost daughter but doesn't recognise its her yet. However we do see her discover the lantern on her birthday and learn things about the city and enjoys her time dancing and singing while admiring the lantern with Flynn.
Repair - The repair in the movie starts when Rapunzel realises she is the lost princess after Mother Gothel's plan seems to work and seems to work against Flynn and get him stuck in the prison. There seems to a huge argument set out between Mother Gothel and Rapunzel where we see the evil side of Mother Gothel shape as Rapunzel finally connect the dots. Furthermore, we also see how Maximums saves Flynn from the prison and helps Flynn to find Rapunzel. Furthermore we discover how Mother Gothel ends up stabbing Flynn and Rapunzel ends up making a last deal with Mother Gothel which was to heal Flynn and stay with Mother Gothel Forever. However this doesn't work out as Flynn ends up cutting most of Rapunzel's hair off which leads to Mother Gothel aging old and ends up falling from the tower. Moreover, Flynn also end up almost dying and as Rapunzel cries we see how the tear drops from her eyes seems to heal him completely and he lives.
New Equilibrium - The new equilibrium is when we see how Flynn and Rapunzel seem to escape the tower. We see how Rapunzel seems to reunite with her real parents and the city seems to discover that the lost princess had finally returned. We also see how Flynn and Rapunzel end up falling in love and he is then part of the family. Furthermore, we also see how Flynn also seems to start using his real name ''Eugene.'' Overall the movie ends up with a happy ever after as we see how everyone enjoy their time celebrating the princess coming back as that becomes their new normal. Eugene and Rapunzel also end the movie by saying how they had also ended up being engaged as the movie ends with light-hearted tunes.

Camera setting practice
This photo we took was taken in an area where there was less light surrounding, and we decided to focus our iPhone camera more on the brown wall and rocks at the right corner to capture more of the darkness in the photo and blurred out some of the light coming from behind the stairs. It was also lowered shot as the phone was placed between the chest to capture more a wider angle. We had also lowered a bit of the brightness itself on our camera settings to make the the rocks and green leaves stand out more. Furthermore, the blurred areas towards the middle end of the picture are also darkened naturally as we could notice some light shadows after we lowered the aperture. I like this photo we captured as the lowered aperture helps in capturing more of the subjects in this photo like the brown walls, the black stairs railing and the rocks and leaves as they are all dark colours.
This photo was taken from a high angle and we had focused completely on the leaves as it was a small plant. We had decided to lower the aperture for this photo and the reason why we made this decision was because we wanted the whole focus on the leaves and be able to capture the bright green colours of it. This is evident because the right side of the photo has more darkness than the right side as their seems to be more white/grey colours rocks. I liked this photo because we seemed to capture the plant perfectly as it was heavily focused on the details with the help of the iPhone and aperture settings. However I think it would've been better if we lowered the aperture a blur/darken more of the white/grey rocks.
This photo was captured in a low angle as we wanted to capture the cigarettes in a flat angle. We had also decided to focus on the first few cigarettes from our view, as the ISO helps showing more details on the specific cigarette in the front. Furthermore, we had used a higher aperture here too blur out the background completely and used a normal setting for the lighting to capture the orange/brownish colour of the cigarettes. It also contrasts perfectly with the black dustbin the cigarettes are on. I like this photo a-lot as it captures the cigarette perfectly and focuses more on heavily on them.
This photo was captured in a low angle to capture the wheel. We had decided to lower the aperture a lot because the sun was directly behind the car which was making it a bit hard to capture the black wheel as the red of the car was reflecting the light. Which is why we had lowered a bit of the aperture but kept the iPhone brightness setting normal which resulted in sun at the back being captured in a higher brightness. Furthermore I like the way we captured however, It would've been better if the aperture was a bit more lowered so that we could capture more of the red and black colours. I also feel like the aperture settings caused the ground to not be blurred as much as we had expected, as our plan was to capture the just the wheel. But I like the fact that the bottom half other picture is darker and the top is bright as it contrasts perfectly.
For this photo we decided to use a close up angle to capture the butterfly necklace and have the full focus on it. We had decided to have aperture as the background behind is fully blurred which helps in having a full focus on the necklace. This led to the close up shot having some less light and this helped in completely focusing on the butterfly necklace and helped in bringing out the red/pink colour in it. Furthermore, it also also visible how the shadows along the shoulders also help in brighting the necklace which is something I really like. I also love the hint of light that's on the right bottom as it creates more detail and with the help of a low ISO. Overall, I was happy with the result of this photo as it seemed to capture the subject perfectly while blurring out the unnecessary light.
Constructivists
Constructivism first originated in the Soviet Union around 1915 and the movement further spread out in Germany later on. The Constructivism art movement places the audience in the real time and space instead of creating ideas and giving the viewer a guidance on the art. It relies on real life matters and artists uses different types of forms such as poster making, architecture and sculpturing in expressing those real matters. Even though constructivism seems to have forms of abstraction and avant-garde used, artists tend to use those elements in forming strong messages by using bold imagery or even geometrical elements to construct the viewers ideologies. The constructivism art also movement helped the progression in the new era of the Soviet Socialist history, as it shaped the ideas that were strong enough to cause 'construction' and make sure that the viewers get a clear message of what is going on in the real world. Even more, Constructivism art is also known for educating and seeking solution by creating art of the modern and industrial society and helping in shaping self awareness with the bold art to the society.
El Lissitsky was a Russian artist, designer, photographer, typographer and architect. He was known for his wide range of creativity when it came to Suprematism and Constructivism art movements. He embraced constructivism by using abstract art to shape the progressive values in the society at the time and encouraged the evolution of social and political values. This specifically was a book cover design he made for the author Vladmir Mayakovsky in 1923. It was an illustrated book that covered various typographical and construction ideologies that were printed in red and black. I like this illustration because it seems to have a clear message with the bold and underlined text in red which seems to be tilted. Furthermore the exclamation mark on the top right also can indicate the importance of the text. Furthermore, I also like the hint of imagery in the illustration itself which can be the small graphic on the top middle right as it almost looks like a security camera which is a creative elements I was fond off in this illustration.
This was a poster Gustav Klutsis designed in 1924. He was a central figure when the Constructivism art movement had began, he has participated in the political and social stands through the early soviet union as a photographer, painter, sculptor, graphic artist and teacher. After gaining more skills under Kasimir Maleevich, Klutsis discovered his own style through photographs he took in his everyday life, drawings and specifically cut-out pictures.
This specific poster was known as ''Oppressed Peoples of the Whole World, 1924'' and this poster helps in shaping his style and what he stands for. He also seems to use the general theme of red and black as many constructivism poster have used. And seems to highlight his text through bold beige colours with a black text background. Furthermore, the next seems to be aligned in 90 degrees which can express the cut-out picture of the potential speaker express his thoughts. Furthermore, it also gives a clear imagery as the rest of the cut-outs seem to be different images of people standing or working which can almost look like they are listening to him even though the pictures might be taken in a different timeline. I think this was a creative and unique style of constructivism and has a clear message to the audience and also seems to hold powerful elements like the colours and the dark contrast cut outs which can show seriousness or express the intensity of the message.
Vladmir Mayakovsky was a Russian and soviet poet, artist and actor. Furthermore, during the early pre-revolution he became a important figure of the Russian constructivism and futurist movement. He further was quite open about his thoughts on the political and artistic movements which is also why he wrote poetry and designed posters to express his views to the audience.
This specific agitprop poster was titled 'Want it? Join', 1920.'' This poster also seems to start off by having the signature red and black colours of constructivism art, and further is designed in a unique way. He seems to use a sequence of pictures to highlight his message. The pictures also seem to have captions which also look like questions as he seems to aim self awareness of what the political issues were doing to the society at the time. I think this poster design can be quite eye opening to the audience as it not only uses text but pictures which can further make it easier for the audience to understand what is going on and know where they stand. Moreover, his style also stands out because he doesn't seem to have the traditional poster design process instead seems to have questions and messages which can leave the audience thinking or curious on their next step.
Experimental Constructivism Poster.
This was an experimental constructivist poster I made using Illustrator. My poster was about labour and how over-working has negatively impacted people. My aim was to stay in the constructivism theme and use the red and black colours but modernise them. I had noticed while researching most of the red that was used in the earlier constructivism poster was a bright red. But it didn't seem to suit the theme I was going for, which is why I decided to go with a deep red colour so that I am still stuck with the traditional constructivism colours and I had added my own style to it.
After deciding on the initial theme, I then decided my main subject. My main subject was going to be a illustration of a my subject in a suit, as that is what most stands out to be when I think of 'work.'' So I spent some time on Pinterest and google researching a good picture that would help me design. At the end I came across an artist known as 'tskrening' who had made an inception poster I liked. Furthermore, I decided to take some inspiration from that designer and started outlining the picture of the suit and shadow figure. After outlining the figure, I decided to copy the outline of head and paste in a smaller sizes twice and changed the colours each time. I made a small pattern with the colours of the head as to make my poster look more eye catching with the different uses of the colours red and black.
For my font I used Bebas Neue. It is a sans serif font which is the font type that is used in all constructivism posters. The reason why I decided to use Bebas Neue was because it contributes well into the modern constructivism design I was going for and also has thick letters which helps in taking up any extra white space I had. Furthermore, It also helps in making it easier for the viewers to read as I had also increased the size too. I had also spent some time creating a sub-quote in the poster it self which was ''who needs who'' with a large question mark at the back. The reason why I added this was to question the viewers about over working in labour and how it can lead to a perilous life style and cause different issues to the workers.
Lastly, to fill up more of white space I decided to add a large dollar sign behind the illustration. It may not be as visible but it can give the viewers more of an easier explanation on what my poster is about and what it stands for. As I had also used beige colours for my fonts to make my text stand out more from the dark and bold red, black colours. Moreover, I wanted my viewers to be have a sense of awareness being raised as they look at the bold and large texts of my poster with the main illustration and question how some workplaces are not taking precautions in taking care of their workers.
Surrealism
The surrealism art style was developed in the 1920's in response to the tragedy of First World War. The movement had began to express the unconscious mind and to unseal the power of imagination. The reason why the surrealism art movement was impactful is because it stood out from realism and traditional movements surrounding rationalism and instead shaped it into personal imagination and how creative and in-depth the human minds can get. Furthermore, surrealism was heavily influenced by psychoanalysis which is a theory that helps to treat mental disorders by investigating how the conscious and unconscious mind works. This was progressive because it helped people deal with their traumas after the first world war and instead work towards healing their mind by expressing it through surrealism. Surrealism in today's world is more advanced because of the revolution of technology and has influenced many different sub art styles. Even more, it can now be expressed in different forms like literary works, music, theatre and even politics. And now the surrealism movement is celebrated as it helps people express their minds without any limits and be unpredictable to the society.
Why is Surrealism used in campaigns ?
Surrealism has been impactful in many different industries and the reason why it has started to be used more in advertisements and campaigns is because of the general idea it surrounds. The idea which is the expression of the mind into visual art and the belief that visual imagery can unlock hidden desires and motivations, and further echo the person's mind. Furthermore, campaigns may use surrealism to provoke or induce the audience so that they take part in the campaigns and further show off their messages or ideologies. Campaigns may also use surrealism to symbolise their message and use different techniques to juxtapose or combine their messages with another, which can help in gaining the audience's attention and also help them inform the audience. Furthermore, campaigns are created to raise awareness or promote a service and is overall used in many different varieties which means that a campaign needs to have a creative and unique element to help voice their subject. Which is why campaigns may use the Surrealism movement because it is already known for having a creative element and is also known for catching the viewers eye instantly and can further help in shaping the campaigns ideologies in progressive and effective manner.
Analysing surrealism poster
Roman Cieślewicz was a polish graphic designer and photographer. He was born in Lviv, Ukraine and had attended the School of Artistic Industry in Lvov from 1943 to 1946. He also sharpened his talent by attending Krakow Academy of Fine Arts from 1949 to 1955. He is known for having big images at the centre of his posters with a coloured background contrasting the subject. He also seems to use the less texts in his designs and seems to only use it when necessary as his focus is always towards the imagery and conveying the message behind it.
The poster above can a great example of his use of Surrealism to portray the message. He uses abstract images and colours to get his point across, and in this specific poster he seems to have the colour blue in the background contrasting the image which is more of a dirty white colour with green. Colours can be a huge influence in designing as they may speak better than words and here the use of the colour blue can show hollowness, depression or responsibility and orderly. Furthermore, even though the colours used in the main image may contrast the background, the artwork itself can tangle well with the colour. As we see in the artwork there seems to be blank or serious expression on the face as the hands below hold it out to the viewer; possibly an imagery of a mirror. I also noticed an image of a star above the main image and this can mean different things, like the star possibly showing that what ever below is ''important'' or maybe even linking it to heaven. The image of the face also seems to have possibly a newspaper blending in with the face which can show importance and can leave the audience in curiosity
I think the reason why this poster may appeal to the audience is because it can state some sort of truth or responsibility. Roman Cieślewicz use of surrealism has an unusual tone it to and he seems to use a lot of symbolism to express his messages, which I think can be one the reasons why the audience may find it appealing as it gives the audience self-awareness and pushes them to figure out his message on their own and further find a way to even reflect it on them selves. I believe that people from Poland would understand the message more by looking at the brief text in the bottom and have more of a wider angle to the meaning. However, I mostly think that he seems to push his audience to the question what he has done so they can build questions in their heads and unravel the answers through the imagery he designed which is why it may appeal to the audience as it interactive can leaves the audience in a sense of awe and curiosity.
Analysing Surrealism Advertising
This was a surrealism advertisement campaign made on Behance by a designer known as Gabriella Augsta. The main concept of this design seems to be merging surrealism and Chupa Chups a Lollipop brand. Here the main appeal to me is the use of colours and quotes to attract the audience. The colours here seem to be warm toned and it seems to match perfectly with the Lollipop as well, as it has a bright yellow packaging on the top. Which is why I also find it interesting how the background is like a setting of the beach as the colours set out the general appeal. Furthermore, the saying ''Live Surreal not Serious'' stands out to be the most as it describes to the audience what the main goal of this advertisement is and what they should be taking in. The text it self uses cursive serif fonts which just shapes more of the idea of not being serious and the use of the red and yellow colours matches blends perfectly with the colour scheme.
The main image here is what I believe is the most appealing part of the advertisement. We see how there is a Lollipop replaced in the place where there should've been a telescope, as the ''stick'' of the Lollipop is a part of a telescope that a man seems to peaking from. This is interesting to me as it shapes the quote perfectly, The designer here as used the Surrealism principles which is letting the conscious mind discover and created a fun and almost fantastical environment in the advert. We can also discover how the man who seems to be looking into the telescope and Lollipop mixture can be looking to discover the ''surreal world'' which can show the influence of the art movement here. More over I think this design's main target audience can be mostly children as the use of the colours and having a fantasy but also a playful and imaginative environment can leave children curious. But I also believe that this advertisement can also be appealing to adults as we can look at how the tagline can indicate to the adults that they can take a break at times and escape the seriousness with their product.
Positives and Drawbacks of Surrealism
Surrealism has impacted a lot of artists and industries when it comes to standing out and being creative. It has an interesting artistic style and a unique way of looking into the mind of an artist without needing any explanations. As most of the time the art speaks for itself and creates different ideologies. Furthermore, Surrealism has produced some great art/designs in last century, A great example can be how the Chupa Chups logo was designed by a Surrealist artist known as Salvador Dali. This can explore how a surrealism has impacted different industries and has influenced companies to be more creative eye catching. Surrealism further allows artists to creative art in their purest form, without feeling the need to meet specific criteria of how art is supposed to look like. It gives them the freedom to express their emotions and thoughts through this art form. Even more, the concept of surrealism was used and is still used in politics, psychology and fashion which proves how influential it has been and how it seems to grip the target audience perfectly.
However as much as surrealism has had a wide response to the imaginative world there can be a few drawbacks to how much the imaginative art can effect the audience. Surrealism portrays the designer's curious mind which is then injected into different forms of art. Which can tend to be seen in different ways as even though they are captivating there may be times that the audience don't deeply connect to piece itself as it can portray experiences that the audience are not use to in their daily life. Which can lead to the audience either being spoiled or transmitted into the excitement of the juxtapositions to the point where they may feel disappointed when realising that the real world tends to be different from the imaginative and curious mind. More over, it also leaves a huge gap for viewers to interpret on what the surrealists is trying to project in their works. Which is why surrealists may find capturing or creating art challenging but also fun which can always be a adventurous journey for the viewers.
Documentary - TAGS and Psychographics
For my interview, I had decided to do a topic on Healthcare Biases and how gender, race, sexuality can effect healthcare at times. My target audience was towards young adults and people who are working. The reason why I chose this target audience was because I wanted my target audience have some experience in the healthcare and young adults and people who work seemed suitable to me. Furthermore, I also decided to choose young adults because they have a wider circle when it comes to friends or relatives so there is a higher chance of them knowing some biases. Young adults and people who work also tend to be on social media or the internet a lot so there was a wider chance for them to come across some biases they thought were good or bad.
Surrealist Photography
The surrealism photography movement had began post the first world war. It was a response to the tragedy and Andre Breton, who was a poet had decided to talk to more about the art style in 'Manifesto of Surrealism' in 1924. He talked about the principles of the art style and how it stands out from the traditional rules in art industry which gained a-lot of attention and people were intrigued.
Furthermore, this led to more people joining and then were known as surrealists artists. Their aim was to assemble the exploration of the unconscious brain and how the imagination of a human mind can impact the art style in many unique ways. Dreams also tend to be important for surrealists as it is a direct connection to the unconscious brain. Surrealists artist at times tend to recreate their dreams using photography, painting or even poets as dreaming is a form of brain creating stories without having the control of the mind. Photography specifically, is an art form that impacts a-lot of surrealists. It is extensive in various activities and can help create a realistic view on surrealism as surrealists may use people or things surrounding them to create the art. With photography, surrealists have created their common identity by using the codes of group portraits or the different camera angles which helps them define their art. Even more, with the help of photography they are able to create conceptual images and express their mind without feeling the need to meet a specific principle. Surrealists may use not only use dreams as a way to express surrealism instead they can use a mixture of their fantasies or even do a mixture of two subjects that may deeply connect to each other, further indirectly creating the art with the use of unique expressions.
Ronen Goldman
Ronen Goldman is an artist and conceptual photographer. He was born in California and is known for his surrealists photographers which have been displayed in art fairs in London, Spain, Germany and many more places. His work contains him photographing his dreams and the thoughts of his unconscious mind as he brings to life with his skills. To bring his Dreams to life Goldman has spent serval months planning out his idea and seems to invest himself in his planning before visualising it with his camera and unlimited skills. His dream like photos have been loved by the audience as they are constructed in such a unique form that it can leave everyone around him in awe and curiosity. His photographers seem to be mixture of emotions piled into different poses and forms of photography, as he digs out a mix of sensations like curiosity, excitement, happiness, sadness, fear as dreams may often feel like to people. The use of colours in his photography can also not go unnoticed as they seem to play a role of perfecting his visual on the dream like imagery as he uses a wide range of subjects and even camera angles that help him to capture the perfect ''Photo-dream.''
This was one of his many creations ''We Were Meant for Each other.'' This piece caught my eye straight away and the reason why is because of the simplicity but also the deep sensations within it. As at first look it looks like a simple photo of a couple sitting on a bench while holding hands. However, the fish tanks and the placements of their other hand really stands out in this photo. This imagery here can explore themes like love or intimacy as we see how the couple seems to have their hands on the man's lap, but the imagery used with their other hands can widen more of the elements of love. Their other hands seems to be raised towards each other fish tanks which could be symbolised as their ''mind/head'' and seems to feed the fishes in the tank. This can already create a story in the viewers head, as it can interpret how as fishes need food to survive and be strong, and the couple who having their hands raised the gesture of giving each other tanks food can show that they need each other to survive and the food can be their relationship or their expression of their love language. Furthermore, the name of this photography helps shaping the piece more as ''We Were Meant for Each other'' can mean how this couple needed each other because of they provide sense of safe and feeling loved when around each other.
The use of lighting in this photography can also deepen the meaning of this photography. As there seems to be a direct light on the lady's left side that seems to widen all around the couple. This can be a streetlight they were under, but the reason why it stands out to be is because the bright light on the couple can reflect how they feel around each other as it can mean they feel energetic or bright around them and it seems to contrast well with the back ground surrounding being dim and almost gloomy. This can also mean how they seem to be trapped in their small tank of love and intimacy and can push aside their darker areas in life with the help of each other. Ronen Goldman does a fantastic job in portraying what love may feel like to some people with the use of the fish tanks and lighting as he captures a simple but riddled with meaning imagery that can leave the audience in awe of this photography.
Surrealism Poster
Planning :
This was my original idea that I had planned on creating. I wanted a Iv drip that would have different social media platforms in it and will show a drawing of an arm creating the illusion that people in today's world seem to depend on social media/phones for survival. However in my final project I had ended up not drawing an image of the arm as I found it complicated for it to put onto my poster. Furthermore, it felt like I had also ran of time in the end which is why I had decided to not add the arm drawing. Overall, I'm satisfied for the outcome of my surrealistic poster but I would want to make sure next time to spend more time on the planning areas as I think my final poster can seem a little unclear as the Iv drip image takes up space and can confuse the viewer but other than that I am happy with my outcome as I met my original aim of creating the illusion of the social media logos floating in the Iv drip.
Final Production
This was my surrealism poster I had made using Adobe Photoshop. My aim was to create a social campaign which will aim on phone addictions and leave a question at the end which will leave the audience in curiosity. My aim imagery of surrealism was going to be an Iv drip that will have different forms of social media logos pasted as it connects to an arm. I wanted to show the audience how in today's world how everyone seems to depend on social media and seems to forget to differentiate between a regular use and addiction. To create this sort of imagery I used copy right free images from google and started off first by finding an image of a Iv Drip. I then pasted the image onto Adobe Photoshop and used the ''Object Selection Tool'' to remove any extra background from the Iv drip Image.
After arranging the size of the Iv drip, I then decided to find pictures of the logos. I had then spent some time using the same ''Object Selection Tool'' to remove any extra background from the logos. Then I went ahead and pasted them onto the Iv drip. My aim was to make an illusion of the logos floating in the Iv drip, which would create a realistic effect and showcase my surrealistic idea of how phone addiction seems to have ''injected'' into the people's arm causing addiction. To create the water/bubble effect I had used the Liquify tool on ''Filter''. I had spent time on each logo and created the effect by using the Liquify and stretching or distorting each logo. After completing that part of project, I had then also spent some time using the ''Perspective tool + Wrap'' in ''Edit'' to adjust some of my logos as I wanted to shape them more into 3D style so the illusion of them being Iv drip makes sense to my viewers.
For my text, I wanted to create the same illusion of the water effect. I wanted a constant theme of water effect to connect in my project, which is why I had spent some time using the ''Liquify'' tool again and stretched out my texts to shape into the same theme. The reason why I chose ''What a Lonely sight'' was to show my viewers that the addiction of phones can cause loneliness into a lot of peoples lives as they depend on their phones for entrainment or some sort of distracting from their daily lives. And even if that does make sense for a while, it has also impacted negatively as social media is covered with a wide range of environment and can also cause people to diagnose themselves with Mental Health issues like depression, paranoia, loneliness. Furthermore, which is also why I had decided to highlight the world ''Lonely'' in bold red. I did this by using the ''Blending option'' tool when double clicked on the layer and added a red gradient and some light shadows so the word stands out. Another reason on why I wanted to emphasise the word lonely because I wanted to show my viewers that the social media can feel lonely as people tend to set their expectations so high on how life should be lived and are left disappointed when that ''expectation'' is not met.
This was a magazine artwork for the magazine 'Interview' made by Tibor Kalman in 1990-1991. The reason why I chose this was because of the contrast in colours in the magazine cover. The main image of this cover seems to be black and white contributing to the black and white pictures that were mostly used in the 18 to 1900's. The main image also seems have a photoshoot I believe happening as the actor poses which gives the viewer a third eye perspective on what is going on in the image. Furthermore, in this image there seems to red bold text pasted on the front of the actor's clothes which is a quote she seems to have said. The quote specifically seems to talk about her experience with misogyny and how people seem to treat her just because she is an actor. This can also expand on how women are treated in the acting industry as women are tend to have to answer questions that do not correlate to their project and are further treated in a disrespectful way.
The red only on the texts can helps stand out her message and further grab the viewers attention right away. The quote seems to be straight forward and does not seem to sugar-coat any of the experience of the actor which can highlight the seriousness of the situation. This can encourage more women who are actors to talk about their experience and also impact the audience as people can now stand up for these talented actors and shut down any ''reviewer'' who is disrespectful to the women in the acting industry. Overall, the use of the red/yellow/blue on the heading and quotes stands out to me because it can grab the viewers attention right away as these colours tend to be bright and bold which can impact the audience straight away. They also contrast perfectly with the main image which is an unique twist that I liked as it gives both the text and main image to stand out on its own with because of the choice of the bold colours.
Adbusters is an Canadian based foundation that was founded by Kalle Lasn and Bill Schmalz in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1989. Their main aim for their organization was as described a ''A global network of artists, activists, writers, prankster, students, educators and entrepreneurs who want to advance the new social activist movement of the information age.'' Their projects seem to mostly be anti-capitalism as they create surrealists designs that can cause a spark in the audience and get people talking. This was their #142 issue for their Magazine known as ''Adbusters Magazine.'''
The reason why I chose this magazine cover was because the designers have chosen two images that corelate perfectly. As many people may know Donald Trump is known for have strong views against political and social topics and this magazine cover seems use surrealistic methods to stand against against him by having a pie image ''smashing'' on Trump's face. The designers seems to have chosen a very specific picture of Trump which is him ''screaming or in shock'', and it matches perfectly with the pie image and creates an illusion for viewers. Furthermore, this magazine having this sort of imagery can be known as bold as the pie can resonate that the designers are against his views. The colours in this image can also be bold to me as they seem to in the theme of Black, white and red. The reason why I think is because it can indicate back to the 80s or 90s as political and social views then can be seen as negative and impacted the people in wrong ways, and the designers choosing this sort of colours can symbolise that Trump's views are similar to that time and further does not encourage any sort of change in society.
The red bold text itself can explanatory as ''Year of living dangerously'' can indicate to the viewers that Trump's views are very harmful to the society. Overall, I think this is a bold and straight-forward surrealist cover as it highlights all the messages with simplicity and seems to encourage people to stand against Trump. Furthermore, it also highlights the organizations main aim which is standing against capitalism and seems to shape their views perfectly by using two completely different images and shaping them to create a message which I find unique and creative.
Brandalism is an international organisations that that collective of artists and activists that revolt against the ''corporate control of our culture and space.'' They tend to confront big business and their public on different politics and social issues and create designs that encourage justice in capitalism and social environmental. This was one of their many designs they had created, Brandalism activist had specifically hijacked ad spaces across Europe to confront the use of carbon footprint and climate change.
This billboard uses surrealistic methods in their text and images to stand out and widen their message. There seems to be an overall theme of blue which connects directly with the airline ''RyanAir'' as their logo is also the same colour. The blue can also represent the ocean and plastic bottles as they have that blue colour too, and this can further also indicate topics of climate change. The designers here also seem to shape their billboard by changing the ''RyanAir'' name into ''RuinAir'' which I find bold and straight-forward as they also seem to use the same bold white font that the airline uses, further calling them out directly. This can be a unique use of surrealistic text in design as it clearly shows what message they are trying to portray in their project. Even more, they seem to use the same methods more creatively when they added ''World trashing prices from'' with a price tag in a yellow colour text which again, connects directly with the airline's logo but also calls out agencies for working with airline companies and contributing to climate change. This use of texts can show how serious the organisation is on their message as they seem to confront the companies to the world.
They use of surrealism techniques used in the imagery also cannot go unnoticed. They seem to have drawings of air hostess wearing some sort of oxygen masks which can symbolise how they much they have normalised the use of carbon footprint as they seem to pose in a salute gesture. I think this is an eye catching method as the image can speak louder than the words itself and can encourage more people to stand against these agencies contributing to climate change. The designers also seem to have a large display of plastic and trash in the background which again can indicate a strong message and show people how much of the earth is being populated. Further encouraging people to stand against this wrong use and find healthier ways to deal with climate change and now just ''ignore'' it which can be a big issue in the society. I think is not only an eye catching design but has a clear strong message from the start which can not only call out companies but deal life people and cause a lot of change which can be good for the environment.
Led by Donkeys is a British political campaign that was formed in December 2018 as an a group that opposes against Brexit and the actions of Boris Johnson's government. Led by Donkeys are known to have their designs simplistic and straight-forward. From my research I found out that most of their billboards seem to tweets that seem to expose the ideals of the Boris Johnson's Government. Furthermore, this organisation seems to spread their tweets to the general public by having them on a large billboard in a busy street in London. Furthermore, they have made clear of who and what they stand against and the general public has also seem to notice as many pedestrians seem to stand infront of the billboards and take pictures further encouraging the message more into the social media.
This specific poster however stands out from their general style and was pasted on the streets of Uxbridge in 2019. It caught attention of the public right away as it holds about 340.3K views on Led by Donkeys official twitter page and had further caused the buzz as it ended up on news articles. I think this billboard cannot go unnoticed as it holds simple elements of designs but the use of surrealism can get people looking back twice. There seems to be large picture of Donald Trump taking up space on the left side of the billboard, but what gets people looking back twice is the small picture of Boris Johnson that seems to be specifically pasted in Donald Trump's suit pocket creating talks and already making clear on what they are trying to say. They seem to further suggest the imagery of Boris Johnson in his suit pocket as Boris Johnson taking the same steps as Trump and causing chaos in the UK. These were strong views against the government and Led by Donkeys do not seem to hold back and seemed to ask for change straight away by calling out Boris Johnson. I think the choice of colours supports them a lot too as the plain red background can suggest bold but also responsibility, confronting on how these two leaders are responsible for the harm they are causing in the countries they are leading.
The organisation seems to also have a simple bold white/red text that says ''Taking back control'' in capitals making it easier for the people to read. This text can directly connect to what they are suggesting about the figures on the left and this can be how Donald Trump and Boris Johnson views have impacted negatively in two different countries and caused harm to the people. I think this was a strong billboard as it seems to have a clear goal and has succeeded by causing people to talk and ask for change as well.
Surrealism Photography
This was my surrealist photography I had taken using a camera and Adobe Photoshop.
My main aim while capturing this image was to create an illusion in my surrealist photography. This is why I decided to go to my College library and stack a few books in a box like shape. After I stacked them I took a few angles that would be capture the box made out of the books. Then I decided to capture a picture of an hallway in my college. I also made sure that the picture of the hallway was in a medium angle so it highlighting more details, as I ended up with an image that starts off with a lot of space and space decreases as you look straight into the hallway. This is how I created the Illusion in my photography. Furthermore, to paste it onto the box made out of books I used Adobe Photoshop. I first pasted both my images and then dragged the image of the hallway onto the box made of out books project. Then I used the Eraser tool on Adobe Photoshop and erased the extra background to create the Illusion of the hallway image in the box made out of books. I had spent some time on the eraser tool and played around with the hardness and size of the eraser to shape the hallway image perfectly onto the box made of books. I am satisfied with my outcome as I had also got some feedback and my class mates seems to sense the Illusion and Surrealism sensations in the photography which meets my aim in Surrealist Photography.
This was my second Surrealist Photography I had made using Adobe Photoshop and a Camera. I had first captured a picture of the College hallway which had only one sign on the floor of social distancing. After taking multiple pictures in a downward angle I picked the picture which I liked the most and pasted it into Adobe Photoshop. After pasting it onto Photoshop I spent some time using the object selection tool and cropping out the covid restriction sign. After I cropped it into the right form I duplicated it so it has multiple copies and is easier for me to edit. My main aim while editing this image was to create a surrealist imagery using the signs which is why I had spent some time playing around and then decided to do a smiling face instead. Furthermore, to achieve that imagery I had used the Perspective Tool on Photoshop and selected the duplicated signs and gave them a 3D angle. The reason why I did this was because to I wanted to create the Illusion that the smiling signs were real, which is why the Perspective tool was important as I got to stretch and distort the signs to my liking to create the surrealistic look. I had also spent some time on adjusting the lighting and contrasting some of the lighting as some of the lights above was being reflected onto the floor. Overall, I am satisfied by the outcome as it met my main aim which was to create a smiling face using the signs and create a surrealistic imagery using those signs.
This was my third surrealistic imagery I had created using a Camera and Adobe Photoshop. I had used two separate images and combined them together to create the surrealistic imagery. How I came with this conclusion was first I had asked my friend to capture a close-up shot of her eye. After I had gotten the suitable image, I had then walked around college and found a flower and took a picture of it in a close up angle as well. After being satisfied with my pictures I had then exported them onto Adobe Photoshop. To create the illusion of the flower in place of the the pupil I had used the Object Selection tool and the Eraser tool. Furthermore, I had spent some time using the object selection tool and selected only the flower and then copied and pasted onto the pupil. After doing that, I then used the free transform tool and adjusted the size of the flower according the size of my friend's pupil. After doing that for both of the pupils I had then used the eraser tool and started erase-ring the extra areas of the flower so it fits into the pupil perfectly. This took me a while I had spent a lot of time making sure the flower covered the pupil so I could create the illusion the surrealistic imagery. More over, to give my surrealistic imagery more detail, the adjustment section was quite useful to me as I adjusted the contrast and brightness for the flower so it blended into the pupil as much as possible.
I was satisfied with the outcome of my surrealistic photography, however I think it would've been better if I had spent more time understanding the hardness of the eraser as that would've gave the outcome of the flower blending more perfectly into the pupil. But other than that, I am satisfied with the outcome of my work.
Campaign Pitch - Mindmap
Extra Notes for Campaign
Primary research - Video areas, create posters
Secondary research - Different campaigns around the world (NYC climate change countdown) / ocean clean up.
Background - Cover topics like covid / monkeypox and how they effected the earth and if there were an advantages or disadvantages effects of these viruses.
Concept - To educate people to take things seriously and not ignore or forget about it a day later. To cause a change and let people know how important it is to call others out. Find solutions by having focus groups that go and talk about the effects of littering and etcetera.
Why I think it would successful is because it will aim for a strong start from the beginning which will be talking about performative activists. and furthermore, with the help of young adults as they have already caused huge changes in different areas of politics of socialism.
Feedback for Campaign Pitch
This was a feedback sheet I was given by my teacher after presenting my campaign pitch to the class. This was quite helpful as I now have an idea of where I stand with my planning and how the general audience feels about the message behind my campaign. Furthermore, my target audience was around teenagers and young adults which is why I found it helpful to present as my class is surrounded by that age group. I also got some feedback on what more I could potentially research on and it was containing some more save the earth campaigns "Greenpeace" and "Extinction Rebellion." By researching these organisations I got more information when it comes to what factors I should include in my campaigns. I got inspiration like including petitions, photography, photos from protests against climate change and more. This feedback will help me create a successful website for save the earth and allow me to reach my message to my audience in the educational and activist elements like I am planning to.
Photography Composition
Filming Techniques
Film makers and Cinematographers use filming techniques to give their visual more life and detail. Using filming techniques comes in handy as it helps in giving the visual more depth and emphasise a specific point of the visual. Furthermore, they may also use film making techniques to manipulate the viewer's emotions and further visualise more of what viewer are seeing in real time by using different was to move or angel the camera. It is important to use film making as it contributes in a lot in the main visual and helps creating a creative and leaves an impression on people.
Extreme Long Shot (XLS)
An extreme long shot is a filmmaking shot that covers a wider area in the visual. The shot films the subject from a specific distance and instead focuses on the surroundings of the subject. This further gives the film maker a chance to showcase the scenery and helps creating different moods according to the what is happening the subject. It further helps the audience connect with the plot more and helps them sense the surroundings in the visual. It is a shot that is widely used in cinema and has always left audience in awe.
Long/Full/Wide Shot (LS)
A long shot in filming is when the view of the surroundings guides the audience on what the subject is seeing. Furthermore, Long shots contributes in what the audience is about to witness and gives them more idea of what the setting of the visual is and further puts them in that specific mind set. It helps in showcasing the style, the cinematography and the main context elements in the visual and is as its name can be longer than most shots. The reason why can be because they want to give the audience a chance to take every detail in so they understand the visual fully.
Full Shot
A full shot is when the film maker will set the camera in a specific way which will give audience a chance to look at the actors from head to toe. It can be widely used to show off the actors's costume or aesthetic but also can be impacted when the film maker wants to show the actor's body language as body language can help the audience understand what the actor is feeling better. Furthermore, if there is a lot of movement in a scene and the actor is moving a-lot, the film maker might use a full shot angle to show what is happening better.
Wide Shot
A wide shot is when the film maker is going to combine the surroundings and the actor's emotions all together to give the audience as much details that is happening in the visual. Furthermore, a film maker might have the subject within the frame while also having enough space to show the audience what is the setting of the the place the subject is. A wide shot helps establishing everything that is happening in the scene and conveys in the body language and emotional state of an actor while also giving the audience a chance to see why the actor is reacting that specific way.
3/4 or American Shot
An American shot was first a translation of a phrase from a French film criticism known as ''plan americain'' and referred to a medium (knee) shot of singular character or group of characters. The way this shot is formatted is when the film-maker would have the camera placed in a medium-long angle and get the shot of all the visible characters in a irregular line. Sometimes the characters may even stand in an obtuse angle, which would showcase their side profiles.
The reason why they might that way and the camera may be positioned in medium length is to enhance a dramatic setting and allow complex scenes to be played out as the camera would capture everything that specific angle. This film-making composition is also known as 3/4 in the modern film-makers dictionary.
Mid-shot/Two-shot/Shot-Reverse Shot (SRS)
A mid shot is when the when the film maker would propose the camera only halfway from the characters body. This means the audience will only be seeing shots from the waist, hence the name ''mid'' as in from the middle. The reason why they may do this is so the audience is able to see the characters face clearly and read into their facial expressions more so they can get a full guidance on what is going on in the scene.
Furthermore, this is also where Shot-Reverse Shot might take place as it would be two shots of the characters angled in a ''mid shot'' as one may converse and one reacts to the dialogues. It is an interactive film making composition as it gives the audience both angles on what the and who the character is speaking about.
180 Degree Rule
The 180 degree rule is a basic guidance that portrays the conversation between two characters or more in an imaginary axis. How this is done would be when the film-maker would keep the camera on the 180 degree axis for each shot but the first character's camera would placed on the right and the second character's camera would be placed on the left and then start with left, creating a pattern of the left and right frames. This gives a straight line that would go through both the character's shot hence creating the 180 angle. Film makers might also do this to show the audience that the characters are making eye contact and also give them a sense of orientation. It is widely used by many film-makers and is a creative and eye catching composition.
30 Degree Rule and Jump Cut
The 30 degree rule formats from the 180 degree rule. What this rule does is move the camera forward in a 180 degree angle preferably by 30 degrees. This creates sort of a slow zoom onto the characters facial expressions and builds up the tension in the scene throughout the camera moving towards the character or subject. There are different ways a 30 degree rule might be filmed and one of them can also be the jump-cut rule, as instead of slow zooming by 30 degrees that camera crew might set up two shots and when edited in the right format it creates a jump-cut and can take the viewers by surprise as they notice the details more vividly.
The use of jump-cut is a creative format used in film making techniques. Film makers would film two very similar shots with a similar framing but the jump cut from one shot to another can be taken by surprise by the viewers. The jump cut would also take place very fast and can appear as a glitch to viewers which can catch the viewers attention straight away. Some might even use to match a beat of song or the background music and can be used in fun and unique ways.
Close Up (CU)
A close up shot is when the camera is zoomed completely on one character's face. This shot can usually lost for a longer or shorter period of time depending on the context of the scene. Furthermore, this shot allows the viewers to have the guidance of the character's facial expressions and dialogues as clearly as possible. It also allows the viewers to feel what the characters at the time might be feeling as the close up shows can catch every detail of their facial expression. It may commonly be used when the character is experiencing some sort realisation, terror, sadness or even happiness.
The Kuleshov Effect
This was a filming technique that was designed by Soviet Filmmaker Lev Kuleshov in the1910s and 1920s. It is a mental observations of how the settings and subjects can change the meaning of the actors facial expression. It further encourages the viewers to think and observe the actor's face and connect the facial expression to what is happening in the scene. Instead of having one single shot that guides the viewers on the context of the scene, The Kuleshov Effect is two sequential shots that the characters see and define their own meanings. It is an interactive effect and can cause viewers to be invested in the film with more curiosity.
Extreme Close-Up
An extreme close up is when the filmmaker will focus on a specific subject or character's face. It can be used to describe what is going on in the scene without having to speak any words as the character might act it out as the filmmaker extreme closes up on the action. It is widely used in horror or thriller films to indicate that the character is scared. Furthermore, it also creates a lot of tension within the scene as an extreme close up diverts the audience view only on one shot and aware them of what is happening in the scene.
Bird's Eye Angle
A bird's eye angle is when the camera looks directly down at a scene, hence creating a view of what a bird would be seeing. The angle is often used to showcase the setting in the scene and helps set the mood of the film. Furthermore, it can be also used to show the audience what is happening around the characters so they can get a full understanding and context of the scene. It helps create more interesting cinematography for the film.
High Angle
A high angle is when the camera look down upon the subject. It is not similar to bird's eye view as this angle is not giving the bird effect but instead giving the effect to may the subject or character look small. Furthermore, it is perfectly crafted to make the audience feel like they are behind the camera looking down at the character/subject. It is a creative way to make the audience feel like they are apart of the film as they watch the scene down them unfold. It can be used the create sensations making a character/subject feel vulnerable and the character behind the camera impactful or even powerful.
Low Angle
A low angle is the exact opposite of a high angle. Here instead of the character being placed in a small and vulnerable state, the audience sense that feeling as they get the sensation of looking up at the character. It is made to show the audience the importance of a character and makes them seem more powerful. This further helps in the audience feeling what the potential character looking above might be feeling. It is an interactive angle as it makes the audience think where they are placed.
Eye-Level Angle
A eye-level angle is when the filmmaker puts the camera in a equal angle as the character/subject. This is created to let the audience feel comfortable and connect with the character as they were in the film. Furthermore, it may be most commonly used in scenes where the character is being interviewed or is talking about something important to give the audience a chance to understand the character more and even connect with them.
Ditch Angle/Tilt
A Dutch/Tilt angle is created when the audience watches the camera tilt in a specific angle to emphasise confusion of a character. It can be used dramatically as the filmmaker might want to place the audience in what is happening in the scene without giving them any time to think. Furthermore, it also be done to show scenes where a character is running through a narrow alleyway or a scene even a car crash scene. The tilting of the camera creates more details and motions so the audience stays invested in the film.
Panning/Tilting
Panning is a creative filming technique that happens when the pan moves the camera in a slow horizontal pace. It is done to show the viewers the scene in a detailed way. It can be used to build tension in the scene can build up the pan into the main shot. However, it is mainly seen used in sceneries or city scapes shots and this is done in a cinematic process as well to express the mood of the shot/scenery. Tilting is when the camera does the opposite of the panning so instead of the camera panning horizontally the camera here tilts the camera in a vertical direction. Furthermore, tilting is when the camera moves in two locations, it starts from point A and the camera tilts downwards and meets point B. This a creative shot as it helps focusing on one subject to another but the focus usually ends up on point B.
Handheld
A handheld shot is when might see a hand extended from either behind the camera or from the character and directly onto the camera Handheld is usually done to give the effect that the audience is present in whatever scene is happening as the extended hand can be imagined as theirs. Furthermore, it can indirectly break the forth wall of cinema as even though the character is not directly looking into the camera there are sensations being created to make the audience feel like the character is talking or holding them or vice versa. It is a engaging and unique filmmaking technique and can make the audience feel more invested in the film.
Tracking/Dolly shot
A Tracking shot is when the camera will track the movement of the scene/characters smoothly by making sure there are no random shakes. Furthermore, a tracking shot either moves towards a subject/object or tracks along the subject/object. It can be used in a wide variation as it gives the filmmaker a chance to enhance the movement in the camera and make a creative cut to the filmmaking. A tracking shot can be filmed using different equipments such as a steadicam or dolly.
A dolly shot is commonly used between filmmakers when creating unique camera angles in a smooth and satisfying way. A dolly shot refers to a wheeled cart that runs on rail tracks and is when the camera movement is mounted on a dolly. It moves towards, away or alongside the actor/location. The reason why this is used is so the camera is able to capture everything going on in the scene. Which means if there is a scene with a character running a Dolly shot would make sure to track the character perfectly by the help of the rail tracks.
Zoom
A zoom shot is when the camera will zoom towards a specific subject. It is usually the actors face to show the a sense of realisation or intense emotion. It gives the viewers a chance to pay more attention to the facial language of the actor and understand the scene in more depth. A zoom shot can also be used in creative ways and this can be achieved when the camera lens is adjusted to give the illusion of the camera moving closer but is actually further away from the subject. It is eye catching and can gain the viewers attention straight-away because of the illusion.
This was a student documentary made about bullying. It contains a large amount of A-roll shot that could be in the interviews. What the person did here first was have a list of questions displayed on the screen and let them sit for a few seconds for the audience to read, this could slightly be a B-roll shot as there is no sound being used and also be interactive as it gets the audience thinking. Then the filmmaker seems to have about 4-5 people they interview with the list of questions displayed first. The setting here for the person being interview seems to either be in a comfortable place or in a quiet setting. This can conclude two things, as it mean that the person created a comfortable environment for the people being interviewed by having them placed in their homes or behind a dark background with just the interviewer to create a quiet environment for the person to talk easily.
They also have some sort of mics being placed behind the camera's as their voices are clear and the audience can understand what they are saying. The questions that are being asked are a little personal which is why creating that quiet and comfortable environment helps the person being interview to express how they feel easily. Furthermore, the interviewer seems to have direct eye- contact with the people being interviewed as they seem to look at the person behind the camera. This can mean that the interviewer was being attentive and had the use of the eye contact could be that they are listening closely and make the people being interview heard. I find this quite appealing as the environment for this documentary seems to be personal so having a quiet setting and direct eye contact can help the person to talk freely without feeling judged.
The B-roll footage here also seems to contribute a lot in this documentary. The filmmaker seems to have specific shots been taken the could express sadness or stressed out to portray how bullying might be like for other people. This can enhance their main message which is to stop bullying and show the audience to take this message seriously. Furthermore, the use of the B-roll directly connects with the A-roll footage as the images like ''stop bullying'' can and the people expressing how they dealt with bullying can show that it should not be ignored and that it happens to people of all age hence why it should be taken seriously. The B-roll footage also has some statistics towards the end which can connect to what people were expressing and their experience. Furthermore, it also show the audience what to do when they are in a situation like that as the statistics show the audience on how to approach this matter.
Overall, I like the main message of this documentary and flow of it as well. It builds up slowly and eases the people being interviewed as the questions are left open handed. This means it is up to the people on how they approach the questions and if they want to give advise or talk about person experience and solutions. And lastly, it creates a successful use of B-roll shot and A-roll shots.
This was another student documentary about Body Positivity. This documentary uses a wide range of B-roll and A-roll footages. The documentary starts with a positive mood by having a landscape scenes and footages of the people being interviewed looking positive and smiling. This already sets a mood for the documentary. After setting out that mood and filmmaker then goes and starts off their documentary by some information on how body stereotypes have effected different people. They also divide the documentary in two parts by having interviewing the woman first and then men and grabbing a wide range of opinions and views. The interviewers are set out in a professional background with a comfortable lighting and mics which enhances the mood of the documentary and makes a safe environment for the interviewer to ask questions the people to answer them as they are comfortable.
Furthermore, the people being interviewed are also having constant eye contact with the person behind the camera which I find helpful to the people speaking as the eye contact and listening can make them feel heard and encourage them to speak out the negative body expectations that are set out by the society. This use of A-roll footages tangles well with the B-roll footage as we also see clips of different models and footages of actors and celebrities gathering and talking about their differences and how they overcame it together. This further gives the audience more context on the main goal and awares them of how this is a wide problem across may different industries and can effect all types of people. Furthermore, the filmmaker also seems to use a lot of statistics to get their main goal across in their B-roll footages and seems to put them out in front of the audience to show them that this is a large problem.
The filmmaker keeps the light mood throughout the documentary which gives the people in the interviews to express their stories more easily, however whilst keeping the light mood they also seem to bring in the reality of body stereotypes which is harmful to all ages. I find this contrast quite interesting as it conveys the message of the documentary but also talks about the problems people may in real life. Furthermore, The music and B-roll footage wraps the documentary perfectly as it gives people the statistics and tells them they are not alone in their journey and that speaking out about your issues can shine a light on the issue and encourage more people to look all body types positivity without placing them in a harmful environment of opinions and judgements.
Overall, I think this documentary makes great use of the B-roll and A-roll footages and highlights their message in a positive and encourages other people to as well to make their own rules on their bodies. The interviews were also held in a comfortable and professional manner and each person seems to talk about their experiences and show the damages of judgements and stereotypes. And this can make the audience feel involved as well and I believe meets the objective of their documentary.
This was my Interview & Vox Pop that I had made only my phone. I had chosen a topic on Healthcare, specifically on Healthcare Biases as I feel like it is important to shine a light on the topic and how discrimination in healthcare sometimes is not talked about enough. Which is why I had then decided to set out two main questions for my Interview. My first question on how the effects of Healthcare biases and second the solution with suggestion from the interviewee. My main aim was to question the biases and if how race, sexuality, gender seems to intertwine in a negative matters when it comes to a person being diagnosed or treated for something. I had a short amount of time so I had made sure my questions were able to tangle the main issue and potential solutions in the general Healthcare work places.
When it comes to the setting of the interviews being held, I was a little tangled with interviewing the people in their place of work which is why I couldn't find a proper interviewing place. However, I feel like it adds more to Vox pop as it helps show opinions from a wide range of the working industry. Furthermore, which is why I had chosen my target audience as people who are working as I believe that their experience is wide and have managed all different clients and problem solving skills. I didn't have access to camera at the time which is why I had decided to use my phone and my headphones as the mic. The headphones were quite helpful as I got to capture their voices as clearly as possible so their voices are being heard.
Overall, I was satisfied with my outcome as I believe that I had met my main goal with my questions and got to learn while asking question myself. Furthermore, I think interviewing a wide range of people who work different jobs was quite helpful to me as I got to meet one of my other goals which was to get opinions from everyday working people as they are experiencing different scenarios everyday. However I feel like it would've been even better if I had mini tripod to hold my phone as holding it with my hand had caused some of the footage to be shaking which let to the quality of the video being a bit low quality. The same could be said about the lighting as I felt the lighting was off in some places but I couldn't do much to tangle that problem as the interviewees were taking breaks to be part of interview and had a busy schedule. I feel like for next time I need to have more planning done before asking people to be in interview and find a better camera set up so the interviews are reflect the professional environment of the interviewee's.
To create this small edit using after effects I mainly made use of keyframes and the wide range of effects the application offers. To start off I first typed in my text in a bold type face ''Welcome Back.'' Then I went ahead to the effects column and searched up texts which gave me the different types of text transitions AE seems to already have in default. The transition I used was ''Random Fade Up'' which meant that the characters in the text would randomly fade up onto the project. I then used a keyboard shortcut (U) which opens up the transition that was placed onto the text and took the small diamonds which are also known as ''keyframes'' and adjusted the second keyframe to how slow or fast I want the fade in to happen. After doing that I decided to add some more creativeness onto the text itself and went to the effects panel and looked up ''Flicker Exposure" and then I used the keyboard shortcut again to open up more details of the transition again. After doing that I spent some time adjusting the colour of the flicker and speed which was a fun as I got to change the flicker colour to red as that was the main colour I wanted to add onto my practise.
After doing that step I want to add a fade in and fade out to the next part of my edit which is why I used the ''Opacity'' settings. This can be done by clicking T on the keyboard or on the little arrow in the name of the composition and transform > opacity. I then used the keyframes and adjusted the keyframes by changing the numbers of how the opacity, so 0% for completely fading out the text and 100% for the text to fully appear on the screen. After adjusting the keyframes on the start and end of the frame I got the Fade In and Fade Out Transition done.
Check Mark/Subscription Text
To create the animation for the tick mark I used the animate tool that comes with the pen tool. I first started off by taking the pen tool and creating two lines that look like a tick mark. I then went ahead and increased the stroke opacity so it is visible and then I adjusted the colour to my liking. I then clicked on the small arrows in the composition box which brought me to the ''animate'' tool that had the small play button next to it. Then I went ahead and right-clicked on the play button > trim paths. After having a trim paths effect on to the tick mark shape I started to create the transition of the tick mark fading in the shape of a 'tick mark.' I pressed on both of the start and end keyframes and started with 0% and gradually increased the numbers to 100% and placed the 100 keyframe where I want my transition to end which resulted in the fade in and fade out of the transition. I played around with the speed a bit by moving the keyframes closer or further to create that fade in effect. I applied the same exact method for the circle but instead of using the pen tool I had ended up using the shape tool and created a circle using that and redid the animation.
To create Subscription text I first started off by typing the text and then I went to the effects column. After going to the effects column I looked up the effect ''Word Processor'' which is a type of text effect. I dragged it onto the text and pressed 'U' on the keyboard which opened up more details about the effect and text composition. In the details there was default keyframes already set out and so I first played the transition and thought it was too fast which is why I took the ending keyframe and dragged it a bit so it was a bit slowed which is how it gave me the transition I want.
Positioning of the animations
Positioning of the animations was a little complicated but I was satisfied with the outcome. What I did on the text and animation was used the 'Position' effect. I pressed 'P' on my keyboard which showed the position effect on the text, then I went ahead and separated the Y and X positions as I only wanted my text to move bottom to top. After separating the keyframes I pressed on the Y keyframe first and put the first keyframe as 0% and then moved the text upwards which led to the number to keep changing accordingly. I did the same thing with the tick mark animation but instead of moving it up I moved to downwards so it was below the text. After doing that I selected both the keyframes in the text and animation composition and right click > easy ease which made my transition smoother. Then I did the graphs, they were longer to do as I had to play around with the graph to find the right speed this was both the graphs that I had done for the text and animation positions.
To finish off I added a fade out effect on both the transition so it fades out smoothly and creates a loop which was a satisfying touch to add in my practice. I was satisfied with my practice as I got to learn more after effects skills and also got the chance to sharpen them a bit by using new effects.
Info-Graphics
An Infographic is a presentation of factual information in a graphical format. It is designed to present statistics or data to the audience, this data most of the time is easily understandable as it contains percentages or numbers. People who make or use infographics do this because it makes it easier to communicate with the audience and express their views and messages with a large amounts of data, pattens in the data and relationships or impacts the data has caused in their campaign/aim. It can also be used to record data and see the overall change in the numbers throughout time. This helps in knowing if the data has increased or decreased over time and shows the viewers the logical approach to it. More over, Infographics is used in a wide range of industries and these industries are usually public and marketing environments. Some uses of Infographics includes; Diversity and Inclusion, Health Risks, Activism, Social and Political Impacts, Environmental Impacts and many more. There are also a wide range of Infographics types and these types help in utilising several visual elements into one and using timelines, data visualisations, comparisons, maps and the most commonly used statistics.
This is a Statistical and Comparison Infographic made for Time Magazine. The Infographic here is heavily focused on the future and how our actions and social/political issues would be effecting us in the future. This Infographic also seems to have ''2030'' written in a large size all over the page in white. The reason for this should be self explanatory as it seems to talk about what the human lives would be by that year. Furthermore, The ''2030'' being in a bold white contrasts perfectly with the rest of the text in the magazine as it is black with a yellow background, hence showing the readers that is something important and should be talked about it more. The statistics in this seem to be in a range of Decimals, Percentages and Currencies. We can see how the editor has divided these statistics in six different sections and highlights the main social, political and environmental issues. Like the population is shown in decimals showing the readers the increase of population throughout 2016 to 2030. This is a highly realistic issue considering how changes have been brought to the world from more efficient health cares leading to higher life expectancy rates. The same can go for the rest of the five sections as the editors is keen on calling out society on their views and how it will be effecting us in the future. I find the use of percentages and currency quite interesting as it is something we might see in our daily lives. An example can be the Poverty statistics and Technology statistics, they seem to show a large comparison from past years which can be shocking to daily people who may not look at Infographics much in their surroundings. All of the six sections statistics are highlighted in a bold black text and I find those issues shocking as it is something people experience in their daily lives, like mobility statistics as transportation is used by every working to higher class people.
The use of the colours in this is also something that can be catching the viewers attentions straight away. Yellow is usually used as a colour of happiness but it is also widely used to symbolise caution or logic. And this seems to be the perfect fit considering the main aim for this Infographic. The use of the yellow and the editor using it to symbolise caution can reflect on how important it is for the readers to take action and be caution of the future. The yellow also tangles perfectly with the the use of black colours on the background texts, bold statistics and information. Black usually represents boldness or power and can even symbolise lack of control or express lack of hope. The editor using the colour black to show the statistics matches well as it can show the reader that is is not something that should be ignored and that our political/social and environmental decisions effects our future. This can go the same for the symbols and type. The symbols here are small drawings of the six sections. It makes it easier for the reader to visualise the statistics and put themselves in the drawings. It shows a wide range of people that are effected by the decisions made by higher ups or even the government and shows the readers that they should speak up and cause change. The type also rounds the aim as the editor used a bold sans serif font for both statistics and text showing and also capitalised the headings for the six sections showing the audience the impact of control and bad decision making.
I believe that using statistics in my campaign can be a great approach. I plan on calling out the poor decisions made by government and the hypocrisy on saving the environment/earth. I can use percentages to show the impact of how much the poor choices have impacted the earth over the years and can also make use of compassion and use statistics that call out people on littering and wasting plastics. Furthermore I can use Infographic in a positive way and use Statistics that show change in the environment when people start calling out on the hypocrisy of people in power. I find this quite useful for my campaigns as it would help my campaign get more attention and have its own creativeness to it.
Campaign Research
For my campaign research I have looked at three different criteria's that surround around keeping the earth in a healthy global environment. I looked at educating other people which involves the idea of raising awareness the right way so that the message sticks out to people. I believe that most of the times people might walk past billboards or scroll through a social media post but by having a strong message or strong visual can help getting people's attention faster. Furthermore, my target audience is based around young adults as they are strong speakers of this generation. My research showed me that TikTok a popular app surrounding young adults and plus has already had the topic of environmental issues talked about. Hashtags like #SavetheEarth, #ProtectWildlife and more have had many videos made with over a million views on them which shows that people are aware of the current problem. With the impact of technological advancements there are also petitions and donation methods through the apps which again takes about a minute max proving that donating can help the organisation to change the environmental issues and raise their voices to more public. I plan on creating something like this by having hashtags on social media platforms.
I also plan on looking at recent issues that have caused a wide impact in different countries. Specifically the effect of climate change in less developed countries. An example can be the flooding in Pakistan on the June 2022, There were about 1,717 lives lost due to flooding which was caused by the heavy monsoon rains and melting glaciers. This also ended up causing a severe heat wave which all links to climate change. I plan on bringing up these statistics in my website and mention the impact to these countries. The reason why I want to do this is because I want to shine a light on how ignoring or scrolling past a donation post or choosing to not speak up does impact people and has impacted in the past. The government of Pakistan has estimated the loss of US$40 Billion from the flooding, showcasing the amount of homes, businesses and lives were lost because of climate change. I plan on using clips of the impact in my website as I want to show my audience that its not only Pakistan but more low-income countries that go through this every year without a change being made. I want to show them that their decisions can change lives and cause a big change no matter how small it may seem.
I have also researched on making a section about wildlife and the problem of how wildlife is now changing with animals on the verge of extinction. I have looked at a organisation like wildlifetrusts.org and how they talk about the government threatening the wildlife's. This website has four main sections which consists of different types on infographics. They have a section for members, nature reserves, km of rivers and streams improved and hectares of peatland restored. I found this quite interesting as they are showing the readers on the first click to the website how they are constantly developing and improving and this can show that change in the environment can happen once people are keen on helping organisations and taking part. Furthermore, this website seems to have a lot of information on donations and current issues which I find helpful as it keeps the readers updated on how much the organisation has improved and also shows them easy links for donation. I want to include this in my website too. I want to be able to show my readers that my campaign is hard-working and will be bringing change to environment. I can also do this by using photographs or even merch and it can be a non-profit merch where the money goes to saving the environment.
Analysis of a print item
This was a print item that was distributed along some other print items to my class. I decided to pick the first one that had caught my attention right away. The reason why I believe it caught my attention right away is because of the large texts and unique use of the images. This newspaper seems to already hold some sort of strong message by having heading on the top right corner "Socialist Alternative.'' This seems to be the newspaper name and by doing some research of the newspaper I also found out how their main goal while producing these newspapers seems to showing more than just the frontline struggles. They provide their readers with socialist analysis, strategy and tactics these movements may need to win. This can contribute perfectly on why they had chosen to use bold texts throughout the main page and have made use of bold colours and images.
Furthermore, they also seem to use strong words with the bold fonts. They have words like "Woman, Life, Freedom" in a black bold sans serif font which would I believe be the first thing the readers would look at as it contrasts with the white and red background. Using these words is a clever idea as it not only gets the readers attention right away it also defines the movement in simple three words. I also think it gives the reader a clear hint on what the movement is about and what they should expecting while reading. Then we will also have the heavy emphasis on the text with the red background. Colours here can be important as the red can show power or action, hence telling the readers it is time to take action and encouraging them to join the movement. The text in white also stands out with the red as it is again in a bold sans serif typeface and seems to be having words like "build" and "international.'' The reason why I believe those words are impactful to me is because it shows the readers that this movement is not only in a specific area or place but a wide range of audience and they are encouraging all types of people/races/gender to take action with them and build a change. It also gives the readers more of a insight on what the rest of the pages in the newspaper could be about and lets them know their main goal when it comes to this movement. I find this interesting and unique because it is not spending "too much'' time on creating something eye-catching, instead they are making use of powerful and bold words which catches the readers attention right away.
This can go the same for the use of the images. I think the image gives the readers a sense of strength as it has women protesting to get their freedom and be able to live a normal life without feeling the need for a person of power taking their freedom away. I also believe that freedom here can mean a lot of things. It can mean freedom from being powerless and less appreciated or the freedom from the high standards society has set out for women to ''meet'' and freedom to the allowance of normal without feeling like they are not meeting a specific criteria or standard. This image highlights the message perfectly, the editor has seemed to do a bit of adjustments and change it into a pixelated B&W colour which can again highlight boldness and strength to stand up from negative socialist views. Black can also be used here evoke anger and seems to express this on the women's faces as well as they hold onto powerful boards with freedom highlighted on them.
This was a website I looked at and found rather interesting and creative. It seems to combine art forms with sustainability and environment which is something I find creative because I had already planning on creating graphical posters for my website itself. This website however, instead creating posters they have used different projects to show their views on sustainability and environment further expanding on how important it is to raise awareness on saving the earth by doing as much as possible. Their main goal seems to be focusing on showing the audience how they can still create and be sustainable at the same time without harming the environment. They are known for empowering the consciousness towards our planet and the social and global society. Furthermore, if scrolling a little bit on the home page we are also able to see some of their projects and campaigns. They also seem to focus on social justice and some of their projects are also based around the social and human rights issues and have raised successful fundraisers.
Some of my personal favourite work from their website (projects > ninth image)was the "Earth Week" they had in 2021. It was sort of a workshop from the June 08-15 and focused on the celebration of World Oceans Day. In their small poster they highlighted what their main goal is from creating this small workshop and how they are focused on ocean climate biodiversity, sustainability in marine industries and had offered tips to the public to contribute to healthier oceans and healthy planet. Furthermore, another reason why I liked this is because each day of their workshops they were dedicated to articles and infographics on the topics above and had left their audience with questions at the end which they could think about and work on. This is a unique and creative way to get more people involved in the sustainability of the planet and I find this quite interesting as they don't even have a specific target audience and our welcoming everyone.
Although I won't be able to host workshops for my website I am planning on interviewing people which I can include in my website and make it as interactive as possible for the target audience. Something more than I found interesting in this website was how their use of typeface and colours in their overall website and projects. They have used a serif font for their main name of the website and the overall website as well. I like this because it adds a hint of creativity to it as most earth organisations seem to use sans serif from my research and gives it more of a visual and aesthetic pleasing elements. They seem to have a theme grey and black overall, using black for the text and grey for the overall website. Even though it may seem minimalistic, I think the colours give the projects more of a chance to stand out as their projects seem to have a lot more earthy colours like green, blue, brown. Grey signifies calm, control and maturity which can reflect on their main aim. Grey on the overall website can mean they want the audience to approach in a mature and calm manner and contribute to environment in a healthy and have the ability to control the environment in a sustainable and positive way. I like the idea of that as it reflects a lot on what type of people they are and what the general public should be expecting from them.
Overall I really like this website as it seems to hold a mixture of creative elements and seems keen on their objectives and work on different campaigns/workshops/fundraisers and projects to achieve those aims. I also saw how whenever they created projects they made sure they aren't using any equipment's that would be harming the environment. Like, they used a sustainable lights when doing photography which again shows how much in control they are of their actions and are impacting it in their everyday life. I also loved the idea of how their visuals seem to have a film vibe as it catches my eye as it quite appealing and enhances the earth like colours they use. This research helped me a lot on how I want to design my website and what I want to include and how much of I want to include.
Documentary Storyboard/Planning
This is my storyboard planning for my documentary. I have divided it into six sections and have done a rough sketches of how I want to execute my documentary. Starting off, In the first scene (titled number one) I have a small intro text for the name of my documentary. I had written ''Save the Earth'' for now as I had not come up with a proper name yet, as I want my documentary name to be eye-catching. However, that intro scene would last about 5-10 seconds and have some animations/cinematography playing in the back. Then we will fade in the second scene which will be a small display of cinematography of the environment as my campaign is about saving the earth I want to display the environment as much as possible. I will be showing scenes like cars passing by, sun sets or even littering and show different impacts of pollution and plastic waste. This will show the viewers the reality we live in and how ignoring the issue or walking past it is making it worse. While the scenes are playing I also plan on doing a voice over and giving the documentary 10-15 second introduction where I will talk about the how important it is to pick the right options when it comes to being sustainable and helping the environment. This will give the viewers an insight on what the documentary is going to be talking about.
I am then going to be having a fade in black screen which will display my first question to the audience. This will be a why question, and it will be stay on for about 5-7 seconds giving the viewers a chance to digest the question. Then my screen is going fade out and fade in the interviews I am planning to take. I will be interviewing about 3-4 people from my college on their thoughts on climate change and why it is important to stay sustainable. The interviews will be set up professionally, letting the viewers know the approach for this documentary is informative and educational. The first question and answers for the interview will last about a minute max. After that my screen will fade out again and film some clips of the environment or have actors that show ''littering'' so the viewer is able to understand the impact of these issues. I will also have subtitles in my documentary throughout, the reason why I want to do this is because I want to make sure my viewers are understanding the message of my documentary clearly and if subtitles will make it easier for them I will include. I have also talked to a few of my classmates on their thoughts about subtitles as that is the age group I will be aiming my target audience on and they said it would be quite helpful as well.
Furthermore, I will be repeating this process throughout my documentary I will have three main questions '' Why, Where/What and How these questions will expand more as the documentary goes on and the answers to those questions will include tips and interviews and even small hashtags at the end. I want to approach this documentary as educational but also helpful at the same time so that my target audience is able to use these tips and keep the environment in mind.
This were rough sketches that I did in mind of creating a campaign identity for my campaign. My aim for this campaign is to inform people on how their actions are effecting the environment. But even though some elements in my campaign will focus on hypocrisy I want to make sure it comes out in an educational way and does not have any negative feel to it. Which is why I designed this logo and name. The name of my campaign is EcoEarth it is combined with the word ''ecosystem'' and ''earth.'' The reason why I chose Eco is because healthy ecosystems clean the air, purify the earth, maintain our soil and more so having the word Eco next to Earth can indicate to idea of keeping the earth clean and being sustainable. I had done some rough typefaces I could possibly end up using and these were a mix of serif fonts and cursive typefaces. I like the idea of using a serif/cursive typeface because it adds more appeal onto my campaign and gives it more of an informative but also earth feel to it which is what I am aiming for. I also looked at some other fonts on Dafont and found it quite helpful as well. These font types below were all in the serif category and I loved the small cursives in the "NT Vanilla'' typeface and the simple and sort of a 90's feel with the ''AppleGaramond-Light'' typeface as it is a typeface used by the company apple in the 90's.
For the logo I did rough sketches of how I would want a visual element look next to my main name of the campaign. I made a logo because I believe that if my target audience likes my logo it would automatically stand out to them in their minds and whenever they would see it they would know what the campaign is and what my aims are. Furthermore, my logo is a 4 clover leaf; the reason why I specifically chose a 4 clover leaf is because many people also see it as a ''lucky charm.'' The story originates from the Middle Ages where it was believed by some Celtic groups that finding a 4 clover leaf would help them see fairies and ward off evil spirits. The modernised version also means the same and is known as good luck, faith, love and hope. So the idea of having a 4 clover leaf next to my campaign name can symbolise the idea of how keeping the earth clean can give people a sense of hope that the earth is healthy. It also symbolises the idea of how our decisions in keeping the environment clean can be as a ''lucky charm'' to the society. It can also be said vice versa as we can be a lucky charm for the earth by keeping it clean and making the right decisions when it comes to being sustainable and protecting wildlife.
Developing My Campaign
This is the final font type I went with after some more research. I had originally planned the apple font but after experimenting with some typefaces I found this typeface on BeFonts and ended up really liking it. After deciding my font, I decided to design the website and posters. Below is my Poster planning and process. This was the initial planning and experimenting I had done using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. I had spent a lot of time sketching out how I want my posters to look like and wanted the themes to match with each other. It was a creative process for me define my personal style and also perfect more of my vector art skills as all of the illustrations in the poster were done by me on Illustrator by using the Pen/Curvature Tool. More on the colour scheme, I wanted the colours in my posters to match each other. If you look closely each poster has another posters colour in it and it sort of tangles together and creates the main colour identity of my campaign which is Green, Blue and Light/Grey brown. Furthermore, to give my campaign more of a unique identity I decided to use this "Sonder Font" as well as my Logo as the main identity and how people would recognise my campaign. I used this font throughout my whole campaign and even included it in my Documentary as well. Below is a series of images that show some more sketches and colours I had done to create the posters and give my campaign more unique elements. I had spent some time experimenting with the style and the "Sonder" font to see how it would look throughout the posters and has also done some sketches before hand on how I wanted my posters to look like.
This was my final documentary I made using iMovie & Capcut. I have used copyright free footages and voiceovers from news as I felt that I wasn't able to cover much footage on my own. However I did add some few footages I had filmed myself which includes the interviews I had taken and the sunset and flower footages which was taken VIA my camera. I had used capcut to add the captions and I did this to make it easier for the viewers. Furthermore, the music in this documentary was also taken from youtube and was listed as copyright free and free to use. I had also spent some time cutting down my interviews on iMovie and getting all the questions and clips together.
